Educating Professionals on Complimentary and Alternative Options for Care as part of a Total Wellness Protocol

By Monica Grey L.C.S.W., L.M.T.

It wasn't long ago when modalities such as acupuncture, various forms of massage therapy, chiropractic care, and even psychotherapy were considered, “alternative”, or “New” treatments, certainly not mainstream. Today, there has been a massive shift towards complementary and alternative therapies(CAM). Many of the theories behind these practices are dated far before the birth of modern medical technology and yet, they are viewed as outside of the scope of modern science.  As more and more people are requesting these therapies and turning to alternative practitioners for relief from the symptoms of illness, the medical profession is waking up to the benefits and the need for increased access for their patients.   Approximately 40% of consumers use some form of CAM and a higher percentage of use occurs among people in certain subgroups, such as cancer survivors.
